Big Twin Story - From the Airmail Newsletter

..."I removed the sidecar from my bleloved 1967 R60/2 recently. I had bought a pair of new carbs from Bing at the National Rally and installed them at the same time as the side car removal --- my plan being to ride it to the Stanley Stomp in Grand Jean, Idaho on the weekend of August 5-9. This being the first road tip I had ever taken with the bike as a solo unit, I was really excited.

When I left my home in Spring Creek, NV on Wednesday morning, I was in love, The motorcycle ran great, was surprisingly quick and the carbs no longer leaked. Could it possibly get any better?

Well, I'm sure you knew this was coming. At around Bruneau, Idaho, the bike started idling poorly, and by Mountain Home, it was getting to be a problem. Since its only a short distance to Boise, I went for it.

Eventualy, the only way the bike would run was flat out: Pretty interesting ride. I pulled off at the turn-off for Hwy 21 and rode into the Albertsons parking lot to find fuel pouring out of my left carb. Thinking  that I had stuck a needle, I took the carb apart only to find that my brand new float had stuck. It had a pin hole in it and was full of  fuel. Panic! 2:00 in the afternoon, almost 100 degrees and I'm riding a 43 year old motorcycle!

Now comes the really good part. I called Fred at Big Twin Cycles in Boise and told him my story. Not only did he have a new float, but he would be glad to deliver it to me. 15 minutes later, Fred shows up with the float and waits for me to put it in to make sure that everything was OK. When I told him  I'd follow him back to the shop to pay for it, he told me not to bother. He'd been in touch with Bing and the agreed to send him a replacement float directly. Is it possible to find better service?

If you are ever in Boise, Idaho, do yourself a favor and stop by to say hello to Fred at Big Twin Cycles. There aren't many like him left.

Thanks Big Twin! - Article from BMW ON

My big thanks goes to Big Twin Cycle Center, the BMW dealer in Boise, ID. They provided great service, excellent communications, and real caring. I started up to the BMW MOA Rally from  the New Jersey coast on Friday morning. My plan was to do the Iron Butt Saddlesore 2000 on the way out and end up at Redmond my third night. I needed to arrive by Monday night for Registration setup on Tuesday. I succeeded in Part 1 (2115 miles in 44 hours), however Part 2 didn't go as well, In Lincoln, NE, I noticed my '04 R1150GS Adventure was leaking oil from the rear end. I kept riding and checking the oil level until I reached Boise on Sunday night. On Monday morning I was sitting on Big Twin Cycle's doorstep when they opened. Neil Black, service manager, took the bike right in to evaluate the problem. After about 30 minutes, Neil and Larry Allen, the shop foreman, told me about the oil seal and bushing failure. Even their mechanic Jeff Achenbach came out later to show me the problem parts. While waiting for the repair, I made friends with a number of the Big Twin Cycle people and customers who were there for sevice (and were probably delayed because of my predicament). I was especially impressed with the older guy and his partner (dog) who were greeting everyone coming into the showroom. Henry Louie's technical knowledge was unexpected for a "greeter" who I later found out was the owner. After taking my foot out of my mouth, Henry explained how this type of failure could have happened. I can give no higher accolades to Henry and his people: Great communications, great service. Also, thanks to the editors and contributors of the BMW MOA Anonymous Book where I found the dealer.

"I needed to place a simple order and unfortunately, the dealership in my neighborhood made it very difficult to do. One call to Yusef, and and the part(s) were in my hands in UTAH in less than 10 business days. Outstanding service! Not to mention he was just a nice guy to deal with. First Class Service! I wish ya'll had a shop in Utah :). -Paul"
